Star Indian wrestler Bajrang Poonia has been granted a UK visa for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, which will allow him to travel to the United States for training before the Birmingham CWG, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) said on Saturday. Because they will travel directly to CWG from their training base in the United States, it will be difficult for Bajrang to complete formal UK visa formalities later. Now that he has got a UK visa, Bajrang can train in the US without any hassle.

The 28-year-old Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist had to go to the University of Michigan in the United States for training before the Birmingham CWG last month, but had to stay back in India due to delays in getting a British visa.

A SAI media release said, “The Ministry of Sports, through the Foreign Office, has approached the British High Commission for a UK visa for Bajrang, which has now been obtained.”

The CWG will be held in Birmingham from 28 July to 8 August.

On several occasions, the MEA has assisted the Ministry of Sports in obtaining visas for athletes traveling abroad for competition and training before the CWG.

Bajrang, a gold medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and fellow wrestler Deepak Poonia will now leave India for the United States this weekend. They will train at the University of Michigan until July 30, after which the two will leave for Birmingham.

The Ministry of Sports’ Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) has facilitated the exhibition tour. The training phase in the USA will help prepare for the CWG and other upcoming major competitions such as the Wrestling World Championships, scheduled for September in Belgrade.

A total of 111 foreign exhibitions in various sports have been funded by the Ministry of Sports since the Tokyo Olympics.
