Bajrang Punia gave India its first gold medal in wrestling at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022, as he defeated Canada’s Lachlan McNeill in the men’s 65kg freestyle wrestling final.

Bajrang is an Olympic bronze medalist (Tokyo 2020) and has another gold and silver medal at the Commonwealth Games to his name.

He has one silver and two bronze medals to his name in the World Championships.

Bajrang started his Commonwealth Games career in 2014 in Glasgow with a silver medal in the 61kg category. In the same year, he won a silver medal at the Asian Games held in Incheon.

He moved up to the 65kg category in 2018 and won gold at the CWG in Gold Coast followed by the Asiad gold in Jakarta.

The biggest moment of his career came in 2021 when he won a bronze medal in Tokyo to become an Olympic medalist.

It was a technically superior contest from Bijring in the final as he defeated the Canadian 9-2 on points.

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang dominated the 65kg event, winning three of his four bouts in the first round.

The 28-year-old defending champion beat Narau’s Lowe Bingham and Mauritian Jean-Guillen-Jorse Bandeau ‘by fall’ before winning by technical margin against England’s Geroge Ram.

Canada’s Lachlan Maurice McNeil put up a good fight against Bajrang but the Indians were far superior in technique and ability.

Bajrang has struggled to play freely since last year and his more defensive tactics have called into question his ability to extend his dominance on the international stage, but on Friday he went through the motions without a hitch. .

However, the CWG is not the best platform to judge whether Bajrang has regained its mojo due to inferior field quality.
