The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has released cash prizes for boxers Manisha, Nakhat Zarrin and Sonia Chahal for winning medals at the 2019 Asian Boxing Championships. The awards were released on June 9, 2022, according to a ministry statement.

Boxer Sonia Chahal, who spoke to NDTV on June 9 and 10, said she was not aware of the development and had not yet received the sanctioned amount.

In an earlier statement to NDTV, the boxer said, “Nakht Zarrin, Manisha and I won bronze medals at the 2019 Asian Championships but so far we have not received any prize money. The prize money was received. When we asked an official on the phone about it, he said, “The budget is over. Now you tell me, where should we go with our prize money?”

Sonia Chahal is a spectator at the Commonwealth Games trials at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. A silver medalist at the 2018 World Championships in New Delhi, she is currently out of the ring due to health issues. Sonia’s coach Jagdish Singh has the same complaint.

However, the ministry in a statement rejected Jagdish’s claims, saying that he was employed by the Sports Authority of India when he applied for the cash prize and after examining the application, the ministry decided to ” Cash is not eligible for the award. “

Shri Jagdish Singh, the then Chief Boxing Coach, SAI had also applied for a cash prize for him for the said event. At the time he was an active coach of SAI. The event is not eligible for cash award and accordingly he is sorry. It is worth mentioning that Shri Jagdish Singh was an employee of SAI who joined SAI on 13.11.1986 and Retired on 28.02.2021. As an employee of SAI, he was not allowed to do private coaching outside the National Coaching Campus. Is in legal action. ” The ministry said in a statement.
