World number one Iga Swiatek escaped injury on Monday at the hands of injured Chinese teenager Zheng Kunwein, who dropped the first set of his last 16 of the French Open before reaching the quarterfinals with his 32nd consecutive victory. Sweetek won 6-7 (5/7), 6-0, 6-2 and equaled the third-best winning streak of the century set by Justin Henan 14 years ago. In the first set of 82 minutes, 74th seed Zheng saved five set points, had two of his own and then surprised the top seed by blocking the way back from under 2/5 in the tie-break.

As the 2020 Roland Garros champion series looked in jeopardy, Zheng needed a medical timeout 0-3 in the second set for a leg injury.

Zheng, who defeated 2018 champion Simona Halep in the fourth round, had her right thigh strapped too much and quickly left the second set.

Sweetek took a double break in the decisive match and will face US 11th seed Jessica Pegola for a place in the semi-finals.

Rublev advance

Russia’s world number seven Andre Rubio reached the quarterfinals of the French Open for the second time on Monday when Italian rival Jenkinsner retired from his last 16 due to a left knee injury.

Promoted.

Rubelio was leading 1-6, 6-4, 2-0 when Sunr lost in the last eight against compatriot and world number two Daniel Medvedev or 23rd seed Marin Silk.

Rubello will play in the fifth quarter after Australia in the majors in 2021, the French Open in 2020 and the US Open in 2017 and 2020.
