Liverpool defender Joe Gomez signed a new five-year deal with the club on Thursday. Gomez was linked with a move away from Anfield after making just 21 appearances last season. Virgil van Dijk, 25, fell behind Joel Matepe And Ibrahim Conate is on Jurgen Klopp’s list of favorite centerbacks. Gomez has also suffered serious knee and ankle injuries since joining the Reds in 2015. But Klopp believes Gomez still has a long way to go before he can extend his spell on the Mercy side.

“One of the great things about Joe is that he has experience and youth, it’s not a bad combination,” Klopp said.

“He’s not 25 but he was at the club before me. The best thing is that his best years are yet to come, and I can’t be happier that this will happen to us.”

Gomez, signed from Charlton, has helped Liverpool win the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Gomez added: “It’s an incredible place to be. In my opinion, maybe one of the best clubs in the world right now – if not the best.

“The opportunity to extend our stay here was a really easy decision.

“Obviously, it’s been a long time since I’ve been here, but I still feel young in the great planning of things and the best years are ahead of me. I have a lot to learn and it’s time to do it. ۔ “
