India’s two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and compatriot HS Pranay reached the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Masters with a straight game victory here on Thursday. Sindhu, ranked seventh, defeated world number 32 China’s Zhang Yiman 21-12 21-10 in just 28 minutes in the second round of the women’s singles. However, a tough competition awaits the former world champion, who is currently ranked seventh in the world, as she will cross the swords with Chinese Taipei’s Tai Zhou Ying in the last eight.
Sindhu has a 5-16 record against World No. 2, who also beat India in the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open last week.
In the men’s singles, Pranay defeated Chinese Taipei’s Wang Zhouwei 21-19 21-16 to advance to the quarterfinals against Japan’s Kanta Suniyama.
However, B Sai Praneeth and former Commonwealth Games champion Paropli Kashyap were eliminated.
While Pranit lost to China’s Li Shifeng 14-21 17-21 in 42 minutes, Kashyap lost to sixth seed Anthony Senisoka Gunting of Indonesia 10-21 15-21.
