Serena Williams will be drawn in the first round of Wimbledon on Friday to face France’s Harmony Ten as she returns to singles action after a gap of one year. Men’s defending champion Novak Djokovic began the fight for the seventh title against world number 75 Kwon Sun-woo of South Korea. The All England club’s initial focus will be on 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Williams, who is ranked 1,204th in the world and is unseeded for the tournament starting on Monday. The 40-year-old, who competed in a doubles tournament in Eastbourne this week, has not played singles since suffering an injury during his first-round match at Wimbledon 12 months ago.

Tan, 24, is ranked 113th in the world.

Top seed Ega Svetic, who won the French Open earlier this month, began her campaign against Croatian qualifier Jana Fet.

The 21-year-old from Poland has won 35 matches in a row and made it to Wimbledon.

Williams’ Wimbledon preparations suffered a setback when his doubles partner Owens Jabbar withdrew from the Eastbourne tournament on Thursday due to a knee injury.

The American won the last of his seven Wimbledon singles titles in 2016 but reached the finals in 2018 and 2019 after returning from childbirth.

Wimbledon is widely regarded as the best opportunity to equal Williams’ 24th Grand Slam singles crown to Margaret Court’s all-time record.

Her last Grand Slam singles title came at the 2017 Australian Open.

Speaking after Wednesday’s doubles match, Williams said: “I’m feeling good, I’m feeling as good as anyone can after a long vacation.”
