Viswanathan Anand Beats Magnus Carlsen In Norway Chess Blitz Event, Finishes Fourth

Indian chess player Vishwanathan Anand finished fourth after defeating world champion Magnus Carlsen in the seventh round of the Norwegian Chess Blitz event. The former world champion, however, lost in the fourth and ninth rounds to Anish Gree (Netherlands) and Maxim Vicher-Lagrau (France), respectively, and ended with 5 points in the 10-player blitz event early Tuesday. ۔

The Indian GM started with a win over Arin Tari (Norway) in the Blitz before drawing with Wesley Soo in the second round. He defeated veteran Veselin Topalov in the third round before sharing points with Timur Radjabov.

After losing to Gree and drawing with Hao Wang (China), Anand recorded a victory over Carlson. However, the draw against Shakir Mamedirov and the subsequent defeat at the hands of Vachier-Lagrave paid off his chances of reaching the final after starting with 2.5 points from the first three rounds.

Anand’s victory over Carlson is close to that of compatriot and teen sensational R Pragnnandha, who recently defeated Norway’s world champion in an online blitz tournament.

American Wesley Soo topped the Blitz standings with 6.5 points, one ahead of Carlson and Gary in third place. In this way he got the right to choose his starting number for the classical event.

Anand started his campaign in the classical event with a game against Vachier-Lagrave.
