India’s singles players once again failed to cross the qualifying hurdle in the Grand Slam stage as both Ram Kumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri were knocked out of the Wimbledon Championship with defeats in the first round. Bhimberi lost top seed 5-7 1-6 to Bernabe Zapata Mirales of Spain on Monday night while Ram Kumar lost 5-7 4-6 to Vit Kopreva of the Czech Republic. Bhimberi, 29, started flying as he got an early break in the opening set and at one point he was leading 5-3.

However, Bhimbri lost two set points despite being in an advantageous position and it was the Miralis who took the lead.

The second set, however, was a dramatic one and Bhimberi was excluded from the grass court event.

On the other hand, India’s No. 1 ranked tennis player Ramanathan competed against 19th seed Kopreva, and the script turned out to be something like this.

Ramanathan, 27, looked comfortable with his 21s and winners but lost steam soon after losing the opening set.

He tried desperately to level things up and even took a 3-1 lead in the second, but Kopreva won four games and regained control of the action.

After bowing out to both Bhimbri and Ramanathan, Sania Mirza, who is on her final year tour, is the only Indian confirmed to play in SW19 this year.

Promoted.

The 35-year-old former doubles world number one will be competing in the women’s doubles draw with his Czech partner Lucy Haradica.

Rohan Bopna has decided not to play in the event because the ATP is not awarding points this year as organizers have banned Russian and Belarusian players from competing after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
