Gerjit Kaur scored twice as the Indian women’s hockey team put on a stellar performance to beat Olympic silver medalists Argentina 2-1 in a shootout after a 3-3 draw in regulation time in the first match of the double league. In the sixth minute of the second quarter, Argentina took two quick penalty corners and Augustina Gorzelani scored when her own shot went in after Cecilia Chanu’s cane had deflected.
Argentina soon won another penalty corner but Chanu saved the goal line to dismiss Valentina Costa.
Seconds later, India also got a penalty corner but missed the opportunity.
It was a hockey match between the two sides until the end, but this time Argentina took the lead when Gorzelani scored from a penalty stroke in the 37th minute.
Argentina’s happiness was short-lived as India leveled the score after a second by converting one of Georgit Corps’ best penalty corners.
Argentina kept up the pressure and won two more penalty corners in the third quarter but the Indians defended strongly.
Argentina got their eighth penalty corner in the 45th minute and Gorzelani was aiming to record his hat trick and give his side the lead again.
However, the Indians did not give up and fought with their teeth and nails. Garjit equalized the score 3-3 in the 51st minute with a brilliant penalty corner.
After that, both sides tried hard to score the winning goal but the defensive units stood to take the match to the shootout.
India and Argentina will once again play against each other in the second tie match in Rotterdam on Sunday.
